Wednesday, April 10, a flag was raised to celebrate the partnership between Mosaic Life Care, the Midwest Transplant Network (MTN) and Saving Sight. The event started promptly at 1:08 p.m., to signify the impact of organ donation: eight lives can be saved by one organ donor hero. Later this month, MTN will recognize Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph, Medical Center, for excellence in tissue donation. In 2023 alone, there were 14 organ donors, 33 tissue donors and 76 cornea donor heroes who impacted 3,336 lives. To register to become an organ donor, please visit www.donatelife.net.

The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Last month, Jacob received two nominations from patients for his caring and attentive nature. His nominations read: Nomination one: “Because he clearly has a beautiful soul and good and caring and understanding heart and he’s always on top of things and gets back to me quickly with the answers needed. Thank you. I just want to say thank you for being so friendly and kind so far. I’m blown away because I came in in handcuffs from a prison and you still were sweet, smiling and compassionate with your job. Thank you.” Nomination two: “I am a caregiver for Doug (patient). He and I were high school sweethearts who reconnected after 50 years. I took care of both of my parents with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, respectively. Jacob was Doug’s night nurse, so he had to deal with some serious sun downers. I went home to get some sleep but left my number and said to call if he got bad because he calms down for me. At 1 a.m. I got the call after they’d had to call security. I found Jake with his effervescent smile sitting with Doug assuring him I was on my way. Doug’s cussing and throwing things hadn’t altered his kind and compassionate spirit. No matter what transpired, Jacob met it with a friendly professionalism. He was consistently kind and patient. At my request, he called me back in – not because he couldn’t handle Doug but because he cared. He knew Doug needed to have me nearby. Jacob was dedicated to the care of the patient and often asked if I needed anything.
